Rising above the center of Gifu City is Mount Kinka (329m). At its summit stands Gifu Castle, the historic stronghold where Oda Nobunaga began his campaign toward unifying Japan during the Sengoku period.
Although the current castle tower was reconstructed in the Showa era, the breathtaking scenery from the top remains as impressive as it must have been centuries ago.
From the observation deck, visitors can see the clear waters of the Nagara River flowing below and the vast Nōbi Plain stretching into the distance. On clear days, even the skyscrapers of Nagoya can be spotted on the horizon — a panoramic view truly worthy of a warlord seeking to rule the nation.
The Mount Kinka Ropeway — The Main Gateway to Gifu Castle
The most convenient way to reach Gifu Castle is by taking the Mount Kinka Ropeway.
The ropeway connects the base station in Gifu Park with the summit station on Mount Kinka.
- Travel time: about 3–4 minutes one way
- Route: Gifu Park (base) ⇔ Mount Kinka summit
As the gondola climbs steadily up the mountain, visitors can enjoy seasonal views of the forested slopes and the city of Gifu below while listening to onboard guide announcements.
While several hiking trails also lead to the summit, the ropeway is the easiest and most popular option for sightseeing.
